Never thought I'll be writing about him.Just 4 years ago, when I was just sweet sixteen, more than political authorities could have been sure I knew that UPA-1 will survive. Not at all due to governance,I wasn't an expert upon it.But yes,I had a general perception that Mr.Vajpayee had proved a better PM.May be this perception was due to the aura attached to his personality, that Mr.Manmohan Singh seemed to lack. But,I knew by political obsevation of a novice that he can certainly retain his position by exploiting the communal characters of Mr.Advani.And even if BJP fared better than '04,it will never be able to attract coalition partners. No one will dare hurt minority sentiments.
This scenario has changed so much in 2013.Four years have passed, and from a child I have turned into a youth voter. And looking back these four years, what are my national memories. It is 'August revolution'.No blood but iron revolution. And iron wasn't the weapon of revolutionary. It was the government crushing the people with iron. What for?For doing 'Satyagraha'.Looking some further down in the memory lane,a yog teacher going with the name 'Baba Ramdev',was fasting against black money. The man had come into lime-light only a very few years earlier, thanks to the old but dying art of yog.People were exercising in front of him,and in their homes through electronic media.Powerful politicians could be seen in his camps, praising him. With popular sentiments attached to his yog classes,he urged his followers to take on government on the issue of corruption. In a day, friends turned foes.Politicians and the media, joined hands in lamenting him.Nothing new!One night, government and that too Congress government, caused an havoc.Peaceful protesters were crushed under police boots and their leader was forced to empty the now infamous 'Ramlila ground'.His fault, doing 'Satyagraha'.The spoke-person of the ruling party criticized him for doing an act of crime. One woman died in the police action.A trifle accident, you may say.But something unthinkable had taken place that day.In the land of Mahatma himself, his way of opposition was christened a crime. And in this land where 'saffron-clad' people commanded so much respect,a man among them had been beaten up by government. The government and media felt proud. This feeling was for forcing him to break his 'Satyagraha'.that he was a looser.Anyways, the zeal of Baba Ramdev seemed to end there. But good old days for the goverment wasn't easy to come.A social worker from Maharashtra,to be frank,I had never before heard his name, decided to take the government head-on.He reached Delhi.By his sides were not so famous people like popular RTI activist Arvind Kejriwal and a youth poet Dr.Kumar Viswas. But his famous aide wasn't less than a man,a woman who went more by the title 1st woman IPS,then by her name Kiran Bedi.Another aides too were there, but prominently I knew these three people.A big revolution was waiting to happen.Youths more than anything else, excited.New terms, rather than the old and shaggy like anti-corruption,were buzzing around.'Lokpal' was new to me.Its meaning although sounding and being a hindi word, wasn't much clear.Meanwhile,Anna Hazare fasted for the bill and got unmatched popularity. The government just didn't knew how to handle the situation.Formalities of JPC and PAC was announced. But hand-in-hand Anna was arrested. The situation spinned out of control.Youth, just couldn't believe in the gap between rulers and being ruled in a democracy.Anyhow,middle-ground was reached. And,the revolution receded in oblivion thanks to some treachery on the part of aides of IAC.A small effort,to revive the revolution in Bombay, felt flat. But,the IAC had certainly done unrepairable damage to the image of government.
Came 16 December,2012.I always lamented my friends for never thinking seriously on political issues. But my gen-x in New Delhi made me feel so proud of my country. But the incident which took place that night, horrible. Not in land of animals or in jungle-raj,this could happen.A girl was brutally raped in a cold Delhi night. And the honourable police of NCR,coming under none other than Home Ministry, just couldn't provide with any help.Reason, very simple. They couldn't decide under which area did the accident occurred. The victim was left semi-nude on the ground while police-men discuss their jurisdiction.Inaction by Commissioner was the buzz around and a pat on the back by Home Secretary made the things go round.Winter session of parliament was in progress but tougher laws on this issue wasn't to come. The girl died but made people 'Nirbhaya'.Widespread protestations by youth in Delhi was zealously suppressed by government through police(same police who could do nothing on the dark night).
Public outburst on corruption and women security may have ended, but 2013 was a year of stamping upon everything corrupt and illegal.'2G' spectrum allocation-the 1st major case of corruption under present government was declared void.CAG,Vinod Rai's claim of losses sustained while senior advocate and Union Minister Kapil Sibbal's 'Zero loss' term back-fired.Another explosion by CAG awaited. It was irregularity in coal block allocation. The figures quoted by CAG would have pitted any Mathematics student against the world.17,60,00,00,00,000 was the estimated loss in spectrum allocation. It was exponential times the speed of light, largest value which we usually come across in science.A lot of business men were nailed down too.Coal allocation lined out how the political office bearers were exploiting the public welfare office for their own good.Close relatives of top-most party leaders were being caught.People such as Dr.Subramanian Swamy were proving themselves to be new age social crusaders, fighting against corruption not only in public but in courts.Apart from public blessings, even court gave them their due appreciation.Justice Verma committee set-up to give suggestions on tougher anti-rape laws, busted police and government's claim of efficient response during 'Nirbhaya case'.The government was just out of the picture.Even if it was their,it was blotted in dark.
Just anyone could have exploited the present condition for his own ambitions. If Modi did it,it meant no harm.A clear cut picture of what he had done and what he was planing to do.could be heard across varying stages.Even if some claims were fabricated,he was speaking up.That too in the language of youth. Not just 18+ group, all who were earning and seeing their hard earned saving being eroded due to inflation. The youth unwanted job,he seemed ready to create it.He was addressing secuity challenges, presenting his stage as model.Intellectuals were both with and against him.But he had the backing of solid two-third people in Gujarat, not once but thrice.Mocking at him, treating him as untouchable(remember Amitabh Bacchan sharing stage with him episode),degrading him,all just led to a chant of him name in national media.Claims that we paid no heed to him,we have a better PM candidate,he is no match, just didn't erased his name.Alternative leader was the need of the day.But was the need of the day was a leader who was ready to listen and address the grievances of the youth.Playing cheap politics not always helps. Those youths who were protesting at Ramlila Ground and India Gate wanted their voice to be heard in the elite circle.Tear-gases and lathi-charges may break the revolt,it also has the capacity to break away the votes.
