Wizard of Hockey

Major Dhyan Chand has not been considered for the first Bharat Ratna for excellence in sports. He did not deserved it,of course. The criterion for awarding the Ratna was too narrow to accommodate a sports-person in its preview. No complains.Period.And,Dhyan Chand was a true Ratna (jewel),not just for the nation but for the whole hockey and sports world as well. What he alone did for Indian hockey was magical. His records and number stand even six or seven decades later.Apart,he was the sole brand ambassador of hockey.Football had Pele and Maradona, cricket had Bradman and Sachin, but for hockey he was the only man to be remembered forever. To come more pointedly on Indian context,he was the architect of eight gold medals (the highest ever for any nation) in olympics ,three coming even before its independence.
Dhyan Chand did not belong to an era of commercialization. He played for the spirit of sports and not for money,as in those days sports had no money. The all powerful Hitler, after watching the 1936 olympic final on 15th August(if you want a heavenly sign, its it),offered Dhyan Chand the post of colonel in his army.No one in those eras, even powerful heads of nation, let alone sports-person,had guts to say no to Hitler. But,Dhyan Chand, who was a mere soldier, refused with a smile. He choose to remain a soldier but win laurels for his own nation. And,Hitler accorded him with immense respect,by not saying a word further.Don Bradman, who was no way related to hockey, was quoted as saying "he scores goals like run in cricket".Had it not for the second world war,two more gold medals were waiting to brighten his feathers.
He finally retired as a major in The Indian Army, never to become a colonel.Actually,we are a law-abiding nation.A man is promoted based entirely on his merit in his job.So what if the world worships him.And yes, while Dhyan Chand used to play,no media was there to cry hoax that world worships him. So,nation and politicians have no real idea of his merit.Youngsters, whose blood burns in an India-Pakistan match, most of them are not even sure about the olympic games in which Dhyan Chand made an appearance. After its discussed in the media,48 hours coverage is done on his life and news-channel debate his skills, may be Indian government will realize his worth.
When the horizon for Bharat Ratna had been widened to include sports-person,Dhyan Chand should have been the first choice. That he is no more in glamour,so can be excluded,is a bizarre way to judgement. Its not about Sachin being awarded the honour first, its about leaving him.He was senior,no money came for him selling tooth-pastes and biscuits, milk were not poured for his success,he did not hogged lime-light in those slow moving undeveloped nation. He,by all means deserved this honour, which poor nation could not afford for him during peak of his career, may be together, may be before. But not after.Already, this award has been given to people below standard.Sachin is sure to enhance the prestige of this award. But,Dhyan Chand, was and will remain forever above the clutches and glory of this award. The man who challenged Hitler's Aryan superiority theory, does not needs the blessings of rubber-stamp politicians to maintain his superiority above any other sports-person.

Pseudo Secularism

India,as a nation,if it really existed at the times of Ashoka the Great upto Akbar the Great was always cosmopolitan. The country,as Fahien wrote, was so proud about all its aspects of life, from science to economy, that it cared little about the thronging religious practices rampant in any other country. The culture of Hinduism was so much bifurcated with regional difference that any new religion hardly proved to be significant.Buddhism came and conquered without a single noted muscular opposition. So did Jainism, with its too rigid practices,Judaism originating from Israel and Christianity. After the advent of Islam, both Islam as well as Zoroastrianism came and thrived together in India. All religions were not disregarded but were patronized together with Kings offering due support to the communities with rich social, intellectual or cultural values mostly out of their sense of judgement and fair practice to all and sometimes due to their personal interest.Taking cue from all powerful Mauryan Empire of 2nd Century BC,Chandragupta Maurya, the founder followed Jainism, his son Bindusara,Hinduism and finally his grandson Ashoka the Great followed Buddhism.Advent of Muslim rulers from Afghan, caused much chaos with the looting and breaking down of many temples but the country soon absorbed the initial shocks to maintain their festive and brotherhood rhythm.Sikhism came and rose to prominence following religious debacle by Aurangzeb.English-men being too clever spread Christianity during their rule in 19th century only through the neglected classes of society without mingling with the practices of general masses.
Things changed forever when the country was divided along religious line during Independence.Divide and Rule was the principle British policy and many historian suggest that Britain actually believed that the two nation will sure plunder to come under their rule. Not a very insignificant conclusion, seeing the failed state of Pakistan although the new world order prevented it from becoming a colony.Evidences from that period suggest that,Mahatma, who had promised that the country would not be divided even on his dead body, was deserted by his own colleagues in the Congress party. So,when some people blame Nathuram Godse for killing the Mahatma, they should never forget that an issue dearer to him more than his life was back-stabbed by none other than the party whom he brought to the fore-front of Indian independence struggle and whose crop they cut even six decades after independence. What indeed was Nehru's take on not passing the crown to Jinnah was a majority thronged by Hindus will never accept a Muslim PM.During independence and partition that followed,Hindus and Sikhs were brutualy mascarred in Pakistan but the anger persistent in India was consciously diffused by sane sections. After independence,India became a secular country with a Muslim population even larger than the green new country of Pakistan.Muslims hardly needed to feel any twang of suspension about the secular nature of our constitution.Lots of learnt Muslims, including the first Education Minister,Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, stood testimony to the fact.
But,government was over-conscious and over-enthusiasm over the welfare of Muslims. As a result, the bill for the upliftment and modernisation of society, was termed as Hindu Code Bill. The bill, brain child of Nehru and Ambedkar, chose to keep Muslims out of its preview. Why?It will be done in future. The future never come.Delibrately or foolishly,it wound a blanket around the Muslims. That they must feel themselves differentiating from the majority slowly turned into a poison.Four decades later,Sikhs in Punjab were politicized into playing a blood-bath,and were soon cut to size with Operation Bluestar.Kashmiri Pundits were flushed out of their homes under the nose of central government which chose to go carefully this time(meaning wait and watch,do nothing).Their homes and the valley has since not been restored although the victims have been identified as the present dwellers of valley. They are again shielded from mingling with the majorities of the main-land as if the majorities will go on a killing spree if they are allowed to descend in the valley.Demand for the removal of ASFPA,which is termed draconian,is catching in recent years. Will the demanding Kashmiri politicians explain, what did they do as a responsible forebeares of Indian constitution, did to protect the fundamental right of life for the Kashmiri Pundits. The then CM,Abdullah has since been part of different central governments. The infamous Shah Bano case of 1986,although being about the plight of a single women, had a huge symbolic meaning.Muslim appeasement term was not just coined but its extent too was tasted.A ruling coming from the honourable Supreme Court was reversed on the whims of a PM who had gained more than two-third majority riding on the wave of hate against Sikhs following the assassination of his mother, preceding PM Indira Gandhi.Any chances of a feeling of equality between all communities was systematically broken,as much as that the law of land was not the same for all.Talking about the central government, what helped them treat the two states of Punjab and Kashmir differently.Certainly the census foretold them, they can treat the two minorities differently.Minority for them has become synonymous with Muslims, which in fact with a population of 18% hardly in any real vulnerability. The other minorities, together constituting almost 2% of population is systematically ignored. Its a pure vote bank politics. The constitution, law, society, secularism, fundamentalism and all sorts of ideal bench-marks fail against the ludicirious offer of crown through votes.A uniform civil code bringing uniformity in all, that should have been demand of every political ideology to promote feeling of brotherhood, was discarded so that Muslims can be alienated from other groups and can be treated simply has a bunch of votes.Forwarding to the next decade,an dilipidiated and controversial Mosque had Ayodhia was pulled down by a crowd supported by leaders of BJP.The most significant name missing from the spot and who criticized the whole episode was Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who riding on the wave of many things included but votes captured on the emotional propaganda of this fiasco, became PM within 6 years. Was the mentality of  people in India had became so sick that they were voting for a tamasha, for the mosque episode was nothing but a mockery of sympathy for Hindus. The matter could have been peacefully and legally sorted out,as the decision from High Court showed. In another half century,a Supreme Court decision would have probably upheld the law of the land. But,would the then government would have cared.A law once revoked to favour a certain community for nothing but mass voting can certainly be given another chance. An ace is never a wasted card in a game. Many people who muster and almost force us to believe that Babri Mosque fiasco was the start of communalism in free India, must not forget the earlier episodes right from 1952 and Hindu Code Bill to the present demand of implementation of reservation along religious lines.BJP did a grave mistake,as was said by AB Vajpayee. It brought the veil of secularism to the fore-front of Indian politics, toring it and starting the naked dance of religion. But,Babri was only a methodology to do something different and come to be noticed. An anti-corruption venture during the rein of Manmohan Singh could also have done the same thing later.Afterall,Babri Mosque was not the only Mosque built on the ruins of a temple(there were numerous converted by Babar or Aurangzeb) neither it was the only one related to birth-place of a God(there is a mosque just at the entrance of  Krishna birth-place in Mathura).Simply.Babri Mosque was disputed in court so it became an easy target. The episode forever ended the chances of identification of such mosques either for historical and religious purposes.Apart,it put Hindus on par with religions that use muscular strength for their spreading. But,it was actually in no way spreading, but simply a political chronicle discarded by almost a majority of Hindus. But,unrepairable harm had already been done to the religion.
Babri Mosque was not the only mosque felt in the entire world. As much as that, the mosque in which none other that the Prophet Mohammed had offered his prayers, was brought down, for a purpose as simple as building a road. But such information that could have diffused the tension,as had been done during partition, was rubbished.Important thing to understand here is the prevalent political conditions of those era.A saffron coloured party was gaining huge mileage thanks to its Rath Yatra bringing a new sense of bonding among all Hindus.Other major party,Congress had lost big time elections a couple of years earlier on high-profile Bofors issue halving its seats from 1984 to 1989.Situation was not getting any turn around with economy in chaos(pre-liberation era) and a government handicapped on coalition partners.Regional satraps, better said,caste-satraps were losing their respective holds as kamandal had certainly etched out mandal. All party choose to play the last ace of religion. Some, like BJP,Shiv Sena,Akali Dal sided with divided majority and others like Congress,SP,RJD,CPM and DMK choose to go with the consolidated minorities and branded themselves secular. No where, was the fundamental question of tumbling to religious politics relevant. Most of the secular parties did not hesitated in putting a fear in the minorities for the sake of votes.Necessary rights were treated as government favours. The required government support was not given until big boasts had been braided. The constitution protection to minorities was doled as an allowance by few parties. Most of these so-called secular parties including LJP,JD(S),NC,BSP and TMC never hesitated in forming a government with saffron parties.Remembering the two great icons of anti-Congress,JP and Lohiya, the parties and leaders born out of their good name,RJD and SP,left all shades of other socio-economic policies to join hands with Congress on secularism.
The real secular or communal never existed, nor will exist.Politics on issues pertaining to public completely lost out.So did,all alternate visions from Sampoorn Kranti of mid-70's to the sins of Punjab riots in 1984.When capital punishment issued out to a terrorist,Afzal Guru is made politically sensitive and justification is made for the deeds of IM,the jink must be broken, once and for all.
Three decades of change has not forced any big change in the attitude of all political parties. The belief that politics has moved beyond those era and people no longer vote on religious lines is only half conceived. The next general elections, against the wishes of public and the youth,is again a fight between saffron and green. The most important issues of price-rise and corruption,be it 2G,Coal-scam or CWG causing a cumulative loss of almost 4 lakhs crores to the exchequer is being neglected solely due to the opposition candidature of Godhra-tainted Narendra Modi.Decision on secular or communal character of Narendra Modi has not been left out to judiciary or public. Its daily teared in news-channels and election debates. What puts some party above board to throw mud at other is above any just thinking. But,in doing so,they are robbing people to vote with an eye on all issues, from women security, internal security,Pakistan and Bangladesh infiltration,price-rise,Lokpal,China's advances to just a remembrance of the religion they were born into. All parties, who have failed to make an impact on public welfare, are trying hard to pull us back to the dark eras of 1990's with riots after riots.Muzzafarnagar is just the cherry-top.More is coming unless youth does remember that the colour of blood is red, whatever be the party, saffron or green.

Bihar : The Last Laugh

State of Bihar is again at cross-roads.The improved roads of Bihar since last decade has already ruled out Bihar out of media bad-light but a new political dilemma has brought it under shudder review.Political pundits are crying hoarse over the outcome of Lok Sabha elections but the fact remains that people have no real choice.Exactly speaking,no clear-cut choice as in 2009 elections. And a more dangerous situation lingers.Bihar may again be a marginal player in nation politics if it does not plays a big role in formation of next government at center.Apart from number game, many startling changes linger high upon the political moral of public. The blue-eyed boy in the center of storm is certainly the CM Nitish Kumar, once held as being Vikas Purush(Development Man) but now his fight seems to turn against the alleged communal agenda of his Gujarat counter-part Narendra Modi.A divorce between ruling partners BJP and JDU ensured Laloo Prasad Yadav, who had been by most journalist written off in Bihar politics, got a chance to recover his lost ground. In terms of total registered voters, the difference in percentage of votes between RJP and JDU was a minor 2%.With JDU breaking its tie with BJP,RJD could have easily pipped JDU had Laloo been able to held its fort of M-Y(Muslim-Yadav) votes. Then Laloo could have comfortably garnered close to 20 seats as in 2004 parliamentary elections. But Nitish breaking with BJP will further divide Muslim mandate as in 2009.A tie-up with Congress could have the most helpful circumstance. As if to spiral the dice further, the court intervened just in time to book RJD supremo for corruption charges in the infamous fodder-scam. JDU and BJP together could have further cashed on the ruling to increase their tally but their mutual fight leaves neither time nor will to attack Laloo. The other small player but big politician,Ram Vilas Paswan could have had a fruitful time but the political uncertainty of future allies will not reap rich dividends for him.And what will the two big players,JDU and BJP loose? It seems BJP has nothing much to loose,of course except one of its oldest ally which ended its political isolation. And on moral front,a CM who could have been used to show-cause the developments works of a NDA government. But intruding further,BJP may manage to improve its tally in Bihar but its certainly loosing important numbers in its run off for the Parliamentary elections.Lastly, talking about the decision maker,Nitish.JDU has lost enough grounds in terms of upper caste and Hindu votes to concede his first position in turns of Lok Sabha seats in Bihar to RJD or BJP as per claims by poll surveys. But has his gamble to win over minority votes has completely failed can not be ascertained at once. The last elections show minority votes swaying towards non-player Congress winning it its face-saving 2 seats. It can very well go towards JDU.But the trump card which all seem to miss is women votes. This factor worked only too well for ruling coalitions in 2010 assembly elections helping it touch massive total of over 200 seats. The law and order as well as women education promoted by his good governance,if sustained till next year, could certainly help Nitish beat his previous tally of 20 seats. The point is wether a tally of around a score seems insufficient to prop his name for prime-ministerial candidature,no matter how fractured is the overall mandate in the country.A lot will depend upon how RJD,Congress and LJP manage to bifurcate the caste votes.A voting pattern breaking along the fault lines of religion will certainly take all the credit coming from good governance away from JDU handing BJP close to 20 seats. The political chaos of Bihar ultimately proves to be a circus in which ultimately all lions can roar but are captive.Jinx can be broken only by public decision. Its necessary that people give a strong mandate to single party so that Bihar voice comes strong in the policies of next central government.

Symbols and symbolism

At the pinnacle of Mayawati's Raj in UP,something innovative really took place with the idol-worshiping of Dr.B.R.Ambedkar in Indian politics.Literally, with tens of hundreds of his statues coming in UP,he was one of the few leaders from that era challenging Mahatma Gandhi's stature as a statue.A journalist commented in one of those very few esteemed weekly that the power and pole of Ambedkar in drawing votes in our times is even greater than Mahatma or Nehru.
Hero-worshiping in India is not a new trend.Historical evidence suggest that rulers have issued coins bearing their pictures.Just a blatant display of authority, you will say.The fact is they wanted people to relate with their rulers.Everything they sold or bought was due to blessing of crown.Loyalty to the empire and emperor came foremost in their lives. It was too necessary for the development and wellness of state. On the other hand, the king prospered if and only if his people prospered. Why will the people fight the king from some other state if they do not feel close to their ruler.Every thing in the kingdom was his own and he did not felt any personal greed but only tried to improve the situation of his state. There in lied his safety too.One must love his land for doing any betterment to his state.
But what do the leaders from modern 21st century democratic country want to signify when they spend just millions in making of statues of their living self.Taking lessons from history and ensuring the loyalty of their subject is an easy way out.But they miss one important check point. They are in no way kings of their state but just public servants. At least this is what they boost of doing.Spending money from state exchequer to glorify oneself is not the idle way in democracy. For all the good senses prevailing, one does not need much loyalty for the state in a nation-state.Your political opponent is the one who takes your share of loyalty if you loose in a election. The sole way to win should be your work and your connection with the subject.Statues do keep people in your eyes and earn respect in hearts but does not necessary converts into votes.Actually, people in no way need to be loyal to their leaders since their livelihood and welfare is not the ordeal of the king but the duty of the state machinery.Even if the leader looses his popularity,it in no way affects the state or subject, some more efficient person takes the space. Then why are all the streets and cities being renamed?Just a heart melting gesture.Or something evil indeed.People get trapped under illusion of the ancient glory of Patliputra while Patna goes on under sinister hands(some politicians, never a public, demanded change of Patna's name into Patliputra).
I may be far-fetched in supporting the hypothesis but its true the general public stand by such leaders.Certainly satisfies their own ego. This ego is not for knowledge, money or power in the literal senses of the word, but just to show-off.Showing off has been afterall, the genre of Kings and Emperors. What is wrong if the public too gets to get a little bask of enjoyment and authority under the idol of their chosen and beloved-own-backyard leader?Little peek in the politics suggest that battles have been won or lost over skull-caps,blood has flowed through streets for creating new states and linguistic divisions.Welfare, education, health policies, defense deterrence never cause such public uproars. The recent Anna Hazare movement against corruption was one of the golden linings of upheaval directly linking itself to the perpetual phenomenon of corruption. The golden lining was painted a few moments with black, when people from few backward communities protested against any changes in the law created by Ambedkar.I was aghast since my little knowledge never allowed me to understand how a doctorate from a reputed foreign university has given permission to the numerous corrupt politicians to loot the county. The man who stood so firmly for social justice had never wished the money meant for the poorer section to be hoarded in Swiss Banks. But idol-worship certainly knows no limit and has no scope for just thinking.God is above discussion.
One of my many complaints against democratic governments is they never construct something grand. How will our times go under the pages of history?May be,as a highly monotonous morbid creatures of creativity implying lines of concrete. No building of historical worth has been constructed even in the sixth decade of our independence.Nehru in his great work Discovery of India wrote about the Indus Valley Civilization wrote extensively about the beautiful and comfortable public buildings.Money was spent on public and best efforts were employed only for their service unlike in Egypt or Greek Civilization of the same era with their iconic tombs and palaces. What he did not foresee was the naming of hundreds of public welfare policies under his or his families name. The man with such a brilliant and lucid idea over symbolism has been left being just a symbol by his own people and nation.Ambedkar must have felt the same hook which Gandhi feels when every note bearing his picture is used to bribe the leader of free India he intensely struggled to achieve, the pain that the money spent on his statue was not used to fund the study of another brilliant but poor lawyer in making.

Over-population:Root of all problems

A variety of problems play hide-seek with the great Indian dream of being in the proud club of developed countries by 2020.What will the consequences, exactly put benefits,of being in the elite club,I don't know.A lot is being discussed upon the tag. What will future India look like, the challenges it faces and the distinction it will make for itself is as yet unknown. We had strange mathematical calculation on poverty levels and life expectancy. The year 2020 seems to hold in itself all the solutions to our infinite list of drawbacks from education to infant mortality rate. This belief in dream India, its wrong to suggest completely unfounded, but as yet far fetched. The crisis are just too many to be solved by the limited scope of economic welfare. We may create a huge wealth for ourselves, yet the distribution will always be within scope of questioning.Lets admit the simple fact. Its near impossible to create infrastructure for nearly 1.35 billion people. So much job requirement can not be matched even if we go on to become fastest growing economy.Of course, huge population will make a huge market thereby increasing industries. But what about the basic necessity of food and water.Already the limited fertile land has been exploited too much by the use of chemicals to produce as much as possible. Now,the fertility is decreasing and cost of production shooting up.Feeding 1.35 billion stomachs will be impossible.Real estate business seems to be growing despite all boon and bane in the economic circles. But a reality check is we are not able to get any land for living in even tier-2 cities let alone metropolitan, where getting even flat is a daunting task. Our education centers are in shambles.Government has not gone any extra mile to facilitate higher education and most of the private players are simply making money out of it.Providing quality education even to the worthy and ready-to-pay is also becoming a rarity.Medical facilities in country is just wonderful.Humans are given treatment as per the animals. They are forced to sleep on floors and specialist doctors have really become God counting by the time they make an appearance.Simply put,the hospitals and medical colleges established while Independence were not sufficient for the then population of 40 crores. Now,the population may have gone up by three hundred percent, the infrastructure growth has not kept pace.No matter how much we try,we will never be able to win the race for development crediting to the population density. No leader, except Sanjay Gandhi, during the dark days of emergency(though its much controversial),has even paid a small heed to this matter of prime importance. The story is particularly slack in Northern India, they seem to be taking pride in the growing number pf parliamentary constituencies in their state.Immediate steps are needed to arrest this growth.Rather than giving classy hindi slogans, they must put in proper law.The problem is particularly evident in poor and working classes. And the tragedy is that its pushing them more under the jaws of poverty. Its simple to feed one or two child for them, they can even save. But,feeding half a dozen erodes all possibility of improvement in situation.Government should start special initiative for them and if need be so use clutches of law. After all its for their own good.

The Denied Justice

The center of the storm Juvenile Justice Act was instituted so that any minor is not treated harshly for any mistake.Below 18 years of age,a boy or girl has not yet developed requisite wisdom of taking all decisions correct. So,his case must be seen under the frame-work of a mistake rather than a crime and he must be provided a chance to reform. But is rape just a mistake. There are numerous youths who desire to satisfy their libido but are under-control due to stringent laws of country and society. If at an age of under-eighteen,and how the age is ascertained,by the school-certificate of an illiterate, one can have the girl of their choice,we should remove all veils of shame and start participating in naked-dance of childhood.A 17 years boy is is no way ignorant or even child in the twenty-first century. He knows everything and even in larger magnitude that 34 years old man.Everyone had been seventeen, and everyone knows the simple maturity of that age.Not in terms of business dealing but in matters of social conduct.Even if one holds the hand of a beloved in social place,he is put to shame by others. And if he is 7,he can certainly do the same carefree.
The brutality and the magnitude of crime in Delhi Gang Rape has been monstrous and monster had been involved in the crime. To talk about the human rights of any of them is a crime. The only eye-witness told the media that it was the juvenile who was the worst criminals among all the guilty. He wooed the girl into the bus, aided the rape and finally inserted the rod to murder her.Three years punishment is a mockery of the plight of Nirbhaya.See might be Nirbhaya but the verdict suggests that the criminals are the ones who should actually feel Nirbhaya, which literally transforms into without fear.Did not the criminal knew what he was doing?Raping and murdering an innocent girl.He was all the time understanding the gravity of the situation.Afterall, how many 17 year boys go on to rape a girl! But,the decision is a welcome step for all of them who are fearing law and society.
The court had limited scope in the wake of constitutional provisions. But the Parliament could have certainly amended the provision.Atleast they could have removed rape crimes from the protection of Juvenile Act.But this time, there wont be any consensus in the Parliament. But bring a bill to keep political parties out of the ambit of RTI or to increase the pay off of MPs,then see the general calm and serenity in the procedure. If they can not make a law offering proper punishment to the rapists, they do better hang the people who had dared the government during the agitation for justice to Nirbhaya. They must be today feeling lost and cheated. How can afterall we live with such a huge weight over our soles?Justice has been delivered and maximum punishment offered.Somewhere, down the lane a drunk youth is singing "Jinhe Naaz Hai Hind Per Wo Kaha Hai"(Where are the ones who took proud in India).

Control is the Call

Words delude me.Night after night, the trauma haunts back. But the loss of words continue unabridged.Whenever the feeling of reaching the ultimate slope pains, some other major accident takes away the little delight of feeling that things can only improve from here onwards. The win or defeat with life is a trifling matter. The long and painful journey of Indian courts are a morbid.Legal aspects bore us down. But the nerve breaking fear for the better creatures pain me.Homo Sapiens, that is what be are.Human is a term that exist only in history books. The need is to study science of anthropology afresh. The wind has been so much churned by our activity that good thoughts come seldom in our lives. The evil is in mind.Cleaning it up will take time.Huge gaps have been created in our sole.Swami Dayanand message to return to the Vedas sound hollow.Indian culture doesn't needs to go that back.Recaptualiating the post-independence era is enough.

Ranga-Billa was the name which haunted Indian society for decades. How did it happen? Can man fall so down?No soothing answer were ever discovered for these questions. The case shocked the country as much as a visit to the house of victim Sanjay and Geeta Chopra by the then President failed to let the incident slide back in public memory.Delhi overnight became an unsafe city.Having an escort in the form of a young boy was not enough. The public cry was huge but fell almost in deaf years.Guidelines regarding girls and women safety were issued.National Bravery Award for children under 16 years was instituted the same year in 1978 dedicated to the name of victims as Sanjay Chopra Award and Geeta Chopra Award.Under strong pressure, police and government reacted sharply. The culprits were notched and subsequently hanged.Strong policing and under-fire government did not allowed a recursion of the heinous crime.Almost 35 years later the question raised then remain more or less same. For the public outrage, carving an exact or about comparison is tough. But one thing can not be ruled out.The protests against rape was one of the most blatant display of public emotions in recent era. That too by a generation coaxed by modern gadgets and too much westernized to respect the Indian culture of worshiping women. And therein lies the most painful difference filling the heart red and stretching in the red corridors of power. The police is showing a complete indifference to the magnitude of crime involved.Instead of cracking upon the criminals,it ends up cracking upon the justice-seekers.Its a part of their duty, what for they take their salary, vardi ki laaj and all those high flying oaths and principle can be forgotten and dumped alright. But are they human? No,they are not. They are just homo sapiens.Science might go on proving their characteristics and identities but the truth cannot be ruled out. They are just a species eating and defecating. The guardians of Indian Constitution much stressed on the superiority of public leadership. Its the people who rule themselves through elected representative. These popular leaders will take the last call in a democratic system.Remember the iconic song from Satya, the leader comes and dance with the gangster and his wife.Later, when the gangster is not powerful enough to garner votes, the dancing and jollying gave way to his murder. At elections, the politicians with garlands and folded hands pay their respects to the janta-janardan.These same leaders, instead of apologizing for the ghastly state of law and order, preach the girls how to dress? If they show much expertise in girls dresses why not stage a dance show to lift the gloom. For preaching,we Indians do have lot of baba-logs floating around. We also have some baby and baby in political circles.

A leader should mean a strict business. You were elected to rule and provide the rule of law.If law is being broken,no matter how difficult the situation is spinning, you must make arrangements for its control.Blaming society,morality,education,law-bindings and the not-to-forget western dresses will provide no help.Whatever be the cost, whatever be the way, legal or illegal, this cease to matter.Anger is in streets and pain is in heart. The situation must be bought under control. Why no one dare touches a politician's family?Fear. The word must ring in every criminals mind. The law was never tough enough,in any era of history,to ring this bell.It was the ruler who took shot. That leadership is missing in the horizon. Some leaders, they must be eliminated before criminals, always try to divert focus from this burning issues by evoking regionalism and communalism. This naked dance of politics should be burnt together in the pyre with human values. The question of growth or survival is late to come.If girls,in this land of Radha and Seeta, fail to retain their honour, its worthless to sustain this glorious country.

An Education Liberation

Life's greatest ironies are usually the most unnoticed incidents.Affecting life in no small way,the individual concerned is not supported by the society.Social acceptance of crime is the most worrying face of immorality. The great and largely written rich-poor divide is a consequence of the same. The poor has been subjected to long standing traditions of exploitation by the rich. Not until very recent economic liberation did poor ever question the masterly behaviour of the rich. Was he born to be subject?Or it was just a state of perpetual mindset to serve the rich.Neither for sure, when opportunity was created, many entrepreneurs broke away from generations of poverty to create their own class. What forced them to make such a path for oneself. The need to sustain or food.Certainly not. They were feed atleast as much was required to sustain. What was important that they dreamed beyond. They dreamed to live the life of the ruling class. And they put in effort, tremendous. If that wasn't enough, and it wasn't,as a matter of fact, they went in to challenge the law.The astronomical figures of corruption post 1991 era can somewhat be related to that challenge. But it was not evil. That was not just greed pushing them up.They had to expand their feet beyond the sheet. The law certainly allowed them to do so but the existing pattern of governance did not. They paid to grow.Decades of insecurity had given them much will-power.They just wanted growth, whatever be the price.New scope of business was flourishing with no previous jinx in competition. The sky was the limit. And what did the rich do.They too realized the change.Little late, bot not too much. They too joined the loot.Country was flourishing as far as economy was concerned. But the loot.In the bygone era, rich exploited the poor.It had the approval of society. So called Robinhood looted the rich, but not the whole society paraded with them. Not even the working class supported them. But,yes, few stood strongly by them. Not for their method of earning, but for the struggle against the rich.Few resorted to evil tactics, apart from looting the rich, they started ruling the common folks. But this was loathed away. And one was providing this light to the society of what is to be approved and what discarded away?It was a large variety of people.Lawyers, engineers, doctors, priests, people whom the society accepted not for their money but for their knowledge. This class of individuals have gone intellectually bankrupt would be a fat-fetched suggestion. On taking a closer look, something entirely different and deeply saddening have happened. They no more enjoy the confidence of commoners.Money is the new patriarch of society.Wether its the rich or the Robinhood,it no more matters.Who is making more is all everyone is respecting.By everyone,I mean the so-called light of the society.Rest are just following suit.Or does the reverse has happened.People have started worshiping money and the professionals have no escape but too follow the trend. You can't be sure of any of the aspect.May be both factors are working together. But certainly the losers the professionals. There hard earned impression built by generations of learnt achievers is being wasted in earning simply some coins. The onus of the retarded position could simply be put upon them. Why in the first instance did they support the rich and ruling class and discarded the rebel looters.Certainly some drastic and narrow interests played upon their mind. They have paid the cost undoubtedly. What else do they deserve, certainly, some bits of glory of the bygone era.Yes,we certainly need to restore back their light. The society has strayed away from goodwill.Restoring the old system wont certainly help. How could it,if it failed once,a repeat can not be ruled out. What is required is liberation.'Liberation' the term that defined the high flowing economy, the term which led to a change in years of class struggle and which is making money the new God of social morals and meanings.Liberate the professional class, not just from economic slavery but make it a more free and fair stage like economy.Allow everyone to compete and rise above the ashes. Then only they could take the driving seat in the society and economic prosperity goes together with economic boons to fulfill ambition of a modern and better society.Providing reservation is like providing crutches.Need is to be creating opportunity.Provide good quality education one and to all.Government free-ship programs like Sarv Siksha Abhiyan or RTI is chasing the dream but in limited scope.Creation of a HRD mega-scheme is the need of the day.Education must be accessible by those willing.Free education should be the right of a talented candidate. The resources required for higher education should not be too tough to yeild but it must come knocking on a deserving door. The product of such institute will certainly make the right balance between money and ethics. The class struggle will continue,of course, but the rules of the game will change. The struggle of class should not be the sole struggle,it must give make way for the clash of human mind.A India of dream will certainly be shaped, certainly by a few,but the best few encompassing the whole hues of society.

Wednesday 14 August 2013

Bhagalpur Blinding and Durga Shakti Nagpal

Bihar,as many used to say,was a failed state.Much of this term owes to the so called  'Jungle Raj' period of Bihar's history in post-independence history. Before the setting of this Raj,something really controversial took place in Bhagalpur.Car acid was poured into the eyes of few jailed undertrials in a local police station. This terrifying incident had electrifying effect throughout the crime world in Bihar. The crime graph took a deep plunge. The government and law was not in a mood to relent the matter.Court took cognizance of the matter and for the first time monetary compensation were offered to the victims.Court considered the case as a violation of Article 21 of the constitution. It was claimed that the police-men involved had violated the basic human rights and constitution. The then CJI of India,Y V Chandrachud made an observation to this effect. The police-men came under huge pressure. But an important fact that remains is the huge public applaud gained by the officers.Public rallies were organized in their support and against any possible actions melted upon them. These rallies were not at all organized by some political party. It was the public's swift and spontaneous action against the growing crime in the state in post-emergency era. There was a public nod and approval to the 'inhuman' action.Wether the officers involved were guilty or not, could never be proved in any commission or court of law.Not even a single police-men was prosecuted. The people sternly choose lawlessness to criminality. And mind it people of Bihar are considered backward in their mindset.
Bringing the case to present scenario,an officer,IAS,known for her valour against mining-mafia has been suspended.Days became week, the whole country was in rage.Intellectuals, journalists, politicians and public throughout the country is demanding justice for the officer. But,a question arises, who benefited from the excellent works undertook by the officer.Certainly, the direct beneficiaries were the local people.Even a murmur of protest is missing from them.It seems, they have silently approved the action against her.Their leader is boasting in front of them how he got the officer suspended within an hour, and the people are simply cheering and clapping. Its a matter of choice. The incident took place in UP,a state enjoying a down-ride almost in all aspects of public welfare and administration.Several governments occupying the power have only played the caste-cards in this infamous caste-belt of Indian politics. The public is seemingly choosing caste against welfare. If the state is shrinking in lawlessness,mind-numbing poverty and joblessness without industrialization, should the rest of India worry.Afterall, its a people elected democratic government. Its bound to do everything along the lines of public mood.
Those who organized rallies in Bihar weren't of a high-class.They were mostly down-trodden,illiterate and innocent villagers. In UP,the incident has occured in regions touching Noida, the high-profile dream city of big and the rich. The education they undertook seems wasted against the injustice offered to their public servant.Something must be spoken about the time too. This two starkinlgy different incidents were separated by more than thirty years. Then the people stood for men against the law, only because the men were doing something remarkable for them. Many will agree that the police-men involved in the case were guilty, yet people saw their good and supported them. Here,in a modern city of 21st century,an officer is allegedly suspended for demolishing the walls of a mosque. If people are choosing a petty religious matter over welfare and good governance, they are not just backward by centuries. They are equal partners-in-crime with the mafia. If not for the injustice melted down to the officer, they could atleast have stood for their own good.Always complaining or grumbling against the government does not pays.Either you can make a change with your own hands,or you can wait for a missionary to undertook a fast for you where people can have their regular tamasha or play and fair.
